Poetry: A Perfect Storm

By Baillie Puckett

I’m sorry I couldn’t live up to your expectations,

be the rock to keep you steady

in the waves threatening to consume us.

When you combine two storms

they only grow bigger—

and the longer the peace of the eye lasts

the more devastating it is

when the storm hits land.

Please remember

that I tried to keep the winds at bay

to save you from my hurricane.

I’ve been a storm chaser all my life,

knowing one day

they’d catch up to me.

With you,

I forgot

the ocean is unforgiving

the moment you ignore Her.
